Coastal Beauty

If you live in one of the Maritime Provinces (or anywhere in Canada, really) then you’re likely very familiar with the dryness that the winter months can bring to our hair, skin and nails.  The uncomfortable dry scalp, dandruff, static, worsened skin conditions, lacklustre hair, dry skin and brittle nails.  According to the experts at Harvard Medical School – we experience these symptoms in the winter because of the extra-low humidity in the air, both indoors and outside.  While we can add a cool air humidifier to our bedrooms, and increase the amount of water we drink, there are lots of small and important changes we can make within our beauty routines that will help to protect and maintain moisture in the skin’s protective top layer, the epidermis.

For the scalp, and the skin on our body alike – the first step is to properly remove dry skin before it builds-up.  This can be accomplished by paying close attention to washing the scalp well (always shampooing twice), brushing the scalp and hair regularly (boar bristle is best to distribute the scalp’s natural oils), and gently exfoliating the skin on your face and body then replenishing the moisture and oil with rich creams, lotions and oils. It’s important to avoid harsh soaps and detergents, and prolonged hot showers that can remove the oils from your skin. Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing or washing your hands– this helps to lock the moisture into your skin.
